Senator Victor Umeh, representing Anambra Central, has defected from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC), citing unresolved internal disputes and persistent litigation within his former party.

The development was formally announced on Tuesday during plenary by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, who read Sen..Umeh’s resignation and defection letter on the floor of the Senate.

In the letter, Sen. Umeh said his decision followed extensive consultations with his family, constituents, and political supporters.

He attributed his exit to “lingering divisions in the leadership and unending litigation” within the ADC, which he said made continued membership untenable.

“I remain committed to contributing to national development, but this time through the NDC,” he stated.

The senator had earlier confirmed his move during a media interview, revealing that he officially resigned from the ADC on May 1 before aligning with the NDC.

Sen. Umeh noted that while the coalition that formed the ADC initially inspired hope, it later became entangled in internal disagreements and legal battles that weakened the party’s cohesion.

He also defended the trend of frequent defections in Nigeria’s political space, attributing it to what he described as weak institutional stability within the system.

The latest move adds to a growing wave of high-profile defections reshaping the country’s opposition landscape ahead of future elections.
