On this landmark day, two aircrafts—operated by Allied Air and Air Peace took off from the airport, bound for Saudi Arabia, carrying pilgrims from Imo, Abia, and Bayelsa States.
This remarkable achievement marks the airport’s transformation into a hub for international operations, fulfilling a long-cherished vision of the people of Imo State.
The occasion was graced by Vice President Kassim Shettima, who joined Governor Hope Uzodimma in addressing the departing pilgrims.

The Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport holds a unique place in African history as the continent’s first airport built through communal contributions over 40 years ago.
Named after the revered leader, Sam Mbakwe, the airport stands as a testament to the unity and determination of the people of Imo State.
Since assuming office, Gov. Uzodimma has prioritized its modernization, undertaking critical upgrades to ensure it meets global aviation standards.
These efforts include extending the runway, installing night landing facilities, procuring specialized equipment, and enhancing navigational aids.
Additionally, the administration strengthened aviation security and constructed an dual access road to improve connectivity to the airport.
“These steps were taken deliberately to position our airport, which means so much to us, as a beacon of progress,” Gov. Uzodimma stated.
