Captain Mohamed Salah inspired Egypt to a memorable 3-1 comeback victory over New Zealand on Monday, securing the Pharaohs’ first-ever FIFA World Cup win and moving them within touching distance of the knockout stage.

Key Highlights:

  • Egypt came from behind to beat New Zealand 3–1.
  • Mohamed Salah starred with a goal and an assist.
  • Mostafa Zico scored Egypt’s equaliser.
  • Trezeguet sealed the win with a late header.
  • Egypt recorded their first-ever FIFA World Cup victory and went top of Group G.

Playing in their fourth World Cup appearance since making their debut in 1934, Egypt recovered from an early setback with a dominant second-half performance in Vancouver to rewrite a 92-year chapter of World Cup history.

New Zealand made the brighter start and stunned the North Africans in the 15th minute when Finn Surman powered home a header from Tim Payne’s corner, giving the All Whites hope of recording their maiden World Cup victory.

Egypt responded after the restart with renewed energy and found the equaliser in the 58th minute. Mostafa Zico rose highest to head home Mohamed Hany’s inviting cross and restore parity.

Salah then took centre stage. The Liverpool forward combined brilliantly with Zico inside the penalty area before calmly firing into the bottom corner in the 67th minute to put Egypt ahead for the first time.

The Egyptian skipper capped a sensational display in the 82nd minute, delivering a pinpoint corner that substitute Trezeguet headed into the net to seal a famous 3-1 triumph.

The victory lifted Hossam Hassan’s side to the top of Group G and leaves Egypt needing only a win over Iran in their final group-stage match to secure first place and qualify for the Round of 32.

For New Zealand, the defeat extended their wait for a first World Cup win after also surrendering a lead in their opening draw against Iran.

The All Whites must now beat Belgium in their final group fixture to keep their qualification hopes alive.

Salah’s goal and assist once again highlighted his influence as Egypt’s talisman, with the captain delivering when it mattered most to keep alive the nation’s dream of reaching the World Cup knockout stage for the first time.
