Cristian Romero will miss the remainder of the season after sustaining a serious knee injury during Tottenham Hotspur’s 1-0 defeat to Sunderland.
The 27-year-old defender was forced off in visible distress following a collision with goalkeeper Antonín Kinský during Sunday’s Premier League clash.
Medical assessments have since confirmed a high-grade partial tear of his medial cruciate ligament, ruling him out for up to eight weeks.
Romero’s absence comes at a critical stage of the campaign, with Spurs battling relegation. The North London side currently sit 18th, just two points behind safety.

Head coach Roberto De Zerbi described the Argentine as a “crucial player” whose leadership and presence will be sorely missed in the run-in.
The injury also casts doubt over Romero’s availability for 2026 FIFA World Cup selection with Argentina this summer.
With six games left to salvage their season, Tottenham now face an uphill task without their captain and defensive leader.
