House of Representatives member from Abia State, Rep. Obi Aguocha, has called for better support and higher pay for journalists in Nigeria.
In an interview in Abuja, Rep. Aguocha emphasized the need for stronger legal protections and safer working environments for media practitioners.
The House member expressed concern about the intimidation, censorship, and harassment that journalists often face, adding that such actions threaten democracy and human rights.
Rep. Aguocha praised journalists for their courage in the face of pressure from politicians and the challenges of daily life.
According to him, the press plays a crucial role in keeping the public informed and ensuring that government officials are held accountable.
He urged government leaders and agencies to respect the independence of the press and to protect journalists at all times.

“Journalists are not enemies of the state; they are defenders of the people’s interests. They give a voice to those who might not be heard, expose corruption, and share important stories. Without them, democracy cannot function well,” he said.
Rep. Aguocha also called for a shift away from fear to a culture of openness and honesty.
He stressed that the freedom of the press is a basic right that must be defended and is not simply a gift from the government.
To build a more accountable society, he urged support for those who challenge power by speaking the truth.
“Supporting the press means supporting democracy,” he noted and encouraged young Nigerians to take an interest in trustworthy journalism and back media organizations that focus on truth and the country’s progress.
