The Delta State Police Command has launched an investigation into a viral video alleging that some of its officers assaulted a woman and flogged her over 40 times.

The video, which has been widely circulated on X and other social media platforms, shows the victim recounting how she was allegedly brutalised by the officers.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, SP Bright Edafe, said the commissioner of police had ordered an immediate probe into the incident.

According to the statement, preliminary steps are already underway to verify the claims and identify the officers involved.

“The Delta State Police Command is aware of a viral video circulating on X and other social media platforms alleging that some police officers assaulted a woman and subjected her to over forty strokes of cane,” the statement read.

“The commissioner of police, Delta State Command, has directed an immediate and thorough investigation into the allegations.”

The police said the case has been referred to the appropriate investigative unit, adding that efforts are ongoing to ensure that any personnel found culpable are identified and held accountable.

The command also called on the victim and the activist who shared the video to come forward with more details to aid the investigation.

While condemning the alleged act, the police described assault and brutality as inconsistent with the ethics and standards of the Nigeria Police Force.

“The command unequivocally condemns any form of assault, brutality, or abuse of citizens,” the statement added.

It further assured that any officer found guilty would face disciplinary action in line with the Police Act and existing regulations.

The commissioner of police also pledged protection and support for the victim throughout the investigation and urged members of the public with relevant information or additional evidence to come forward.

The police provided contact lines for the complaint response unit and the office of the police public relations officer to assist in ongoing inquiries.
