The apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has challenged former Anambra State Governor and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, to provide credible evidence to support his claims of threats to his life and alleged attempts to frustrate his political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The organisation stressed that the safety of every Nigerian, especially individuals actively involved in national politics, remains a matter of national importance that should never be treated lightly.
According to the group, allegations relating to threats against the life of any political figure are serious national security concerns that require credible evidence, proper documentation, and immediate professional investigation.
Ohanaeze therefore urged Peter Obi to provide verifiable details surrounding his claims while calling on relevant security agencies to carry out a comprehensive and impartial assessment of the allegations.
The organisation maintained that protecting presidential aspirants and other major political stakeholders is the constitutional responsibility of the Nigerian government and should never be influenced by political affiliation.

“The organisation consequently calls on the Federal Government under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to ensure that all presidential contenders, including Mr. Peter Obi, are provided with appropriate security arrangements as the nation prepares for the 2027 electoral process.
“A democratic society cannot thrive where political actors operate under fear, uncertainty, or threats to their personal safety. The security of candidates must therefore remain a national priority beyond party lines and political differences.”
Ohanaeze further emphasised that while every allegation relating to insecurity deserves prompt attention, public claims involving threats to life must be handled responsibly and transparently.
The group warned that unverified accusations could generate unnecessary political tension, deepen public suspicion, and distract security agencies from addressing genuine threats.
“Accordingly, Mr. Peter Obi is encouraged to cooperate fully with security agencies by providing all relevant information required for a comprehensive investigation.”
The position was contained in a statement issued on Friday by the factional Deputy President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, and the Deputy Secretary-General, Professor Chibuikeya Achoakawa.
The organisation observed that Nigeria continues to face complex security challenges across different parts of the country and advised prominent political leaders to remain security conscious while maintaining close collaboration with authorised security agencies.
Ohanaeze also urged Peter Obi and other political figures to avoid unnecessary security exposure by adopting adequate protective measures during political engagements.
“Security consciousness is not a sign of weakness; rather, it is a demonstration of responsibility expected from individuals occupying important positions in national affairs.”
Drawing lessons from history, the organisation recalled the events of July 29, 1966, when Nigeria’s first military Head of State of Igbo extraction, Major General Johnson Thomas Umunnakwe Aguiyi-Ironsi, was assassinated during a period of political instability.
According to the group, the tragedy serves as a reminder that political leaders must balance public engagement with sound security judgment, particularly during periods of heightened political tension.
Ohanaeze reiterated its commitment to peace, democracy, justice, and the protection of all Nigerians, while calling for a transparent investigation into Peter Obi’s allegations.
The organisation concluded by urging authorities to ensure adequate protection for all political actors and create an environment where every candidate can participate freely without intimidation or fear.
It added that the 2027 general elections must be conducted in an atmosphere of fairness, national stability, respect for the rule of law, and democratic values.
