Following the recent fuel price hike, Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun has approved a new work schedule for public servants. Officers on Grade Level 01-14 will now enjoy two days off per week, while those on Grade Level 15-17 will maintain one day off.
The announcement was made on Wednesday in a statement signed by Oladipupo Ogunfowora, the Permanent Secretary of the Bureau of Service Matters. The new policy aims to reduce the financial strain on public workers struggling with increased commuting costs due to the fuel price hike.
This initiative is designed to offer relief to public servants while maintaining productivity. The governor had earlier introduced a one-day-off policy in July 2023 for all public servants, and this latest extension is expected to further ease the financial pressure on workers.
According to the statement, the governor’s approval for two days off per week for Grade Level 01-14 officers reflects his dedication to improving the welfare of public servants. This adjustment is part of a broader strategy to boost productivity by ensuring workers are motivated and less burdened by the rising cost of living.
The recent increase in fuel prices has drastically impacted transportation costs, making it difficult for public servants to commute regularly. By offering additional days off, the state government aims to lessen this financial load, allowing employees to save on transportation costs while maintaining their energy and focus for improved service delivery.
Ogunfowora emphasized that all accounting officers in Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) are instructed to implement the new work schedule immediately. He noted that this policy should be carried out without compromising service delivery. MDAs are required to create a rotational schedule that ensures smooth operations and efficient public service while giving workers the necessary relief.
Additionally, monitoring mechanisms will be put in place to ensure compliance and smooth execution of this initiative.
