Students of Obafemi Awolowo University in Ile-Ife, Osun State, have protested over persistent queues and movement delays following the introduction of compressed natural gas (CNG)-powered vehicles for intra-campus transportation.

The complaints emerged days after the Students’ Union suspended a 72-hour lecture boycott held between April 14 and April 16, 2026, which was organised in response to earlier transport disruptions affecting academic activities.

The new transport arrangement was introduced after the donation of 80 CNG buses and tricycles by Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, as part of efforts to improve mobility within the university campus.

However, students say the system has created fresh bottlenecks, with restrictions limiting movement to the newly deployed vehicles. Many report long waiting times at bus stops, particularly during morning and evening peak periods.

Videos circulating on social media show large crowds of students stranded at bus stops, with queues stretching across major points on campus, including the Mayfair area, as they wait for available buses.

Some students described the situation as one of the most difficult transport experiences in recent years, while others argued that the number of buses deployed is insufficient for a student population exceeding 35,000.

The Students’ Union Government, led by President Adelani David and Secretary-General Habeeb Oke, had earlier demanded an increase in the fleet size, the temporary reinstatement of the former transport arrangement, and greater consultation with student leaders before major policy changes are implemented.

The union maintained that without urgent adjustments, the new system risks disrupting academic schedules and daily movement across the campus.
