  • NUJ to Hold National Security Summit: The Nigeria Union of Journalists will host a two-day national security summit in Abuja on June 18–19, 2026.
  • Theme Focused on Partnership: The summit, themed “Media and Security Agencies as Partners in Nation Building,” aims to strengthen collaboration between journalists and security agencies in addressing Nigeria’s security challenges.
  • Top Officials to Attend: Special guests include Nuhu Ribadu and Christopher Musa, while Adeola Ajayi will deliver the keynote address.
  • Key Issues for Discussion: Participants will examine responsible security reporting, access to credible information, journalist safety, crisis communication, and strategies for combating misinformation, disinformation, propaganda, and hate speech.
  • Expected Outcome: The summit will conclude with a communiqué and action framework aimed at improving long-term cooperation between media organizations and security institutions to support national peace, security, and democratic governance.

The summit with the theme: “Media and Security Agencies as Partners in Nation Building,” is expected to bring together senior government officials, security chiefs, media executives, editors, civil society groups and other stakeholders for discussions on improving cooperation in national security matters.

This was disclosed in a statement signed by the Chairman of the Organising Committee, Abimbola Oyetunde.

According to the statement, the summit is designed to serve as a high-level platform for dialogue on how journalists and security agencies can work more effectively together in promoting national stability, managing information during crises and strengthening public trust in key institutions.

The statement noted that the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, and the Chief of Defence Staff, Christopher Musa, will attend as special guests of honour.

Also expected at the event is the Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), Adeola Ajayi, who will deliver the keynote address, while the National President of the NUJ, Alhassan Yahya, will host the gathering.

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, will chair the occasion.

The organisers said the summit comes at a critical time when Nigeria continues to face complex security threats, the spread of misinformation and growing public concern over national safety.

They stressed that regular engagement between journalists and security agencies is essential for improving crisis communication, combating fake news and ensuring the public receives timely and accurate information.

Key issues slated for discussion include responsible reporting of security operations and conflicts, access to credible information and official briefings, handling sensitive information without compromising security operations, and ensuring the safety of journalists covering conflict and security-related stories.

Participants will also examine strategies for tackling disinformation, propaganda and hate speech, while exploring ways to foster mutual trust and respect between media professionals and security personnel.

The summit will feature keynote presentations, panel discussions, breakout sessions, interactive engagements with security chiefs, and experience-sharing sessions involving journalists who report from conflict zones and other high-risk environments.
