The Nigerian film industry has been thrown into mourning following the death of veteran actress and filmmaker Oby Kechere, fondly remembered for her role as “Madam Koi Koi” in the 2002 classic Aki na Ukwa.

Her passing was confirmed by Uche Agbo, president of the Directors Guild of Nigeria (DGN), who disclosed that she died on April 27, 2026, after a prolonged illness.

In an official statement, the DGN described Kechere as a dedicated professional and a key figure within the guild, particularly serving as vice chairman of its Abuja chapter.

The guild praised her contributions to the growth and unity of Nollywood, noting that her legacy would not be forgotten.

A graduate of Theatre Arts from the University of Ibadan, Kechere began her acting career in 2001, gaining early recognition through “August Meeting” films before rising to wider fame.

Originally from Mbaise in Imo State, she remained an active and respected figure in the industry over the years.

Her death marks another painful loss for Nollywood, as colleagues and fans continue to pay tribute to her life and impact.
