The Nigerian Meteorological Agency has secured the ISO 9001:2015 certification for its aeronautical meteorological services at Yola, Osubi and Owerri airports.

The achievement further strengthens Nigeria’s compliance with international aviation safety and quality standards.

The certification followed a directive by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, to NiMet’s Director-General and Chief Executive Officer, Prof. Charles Anosike, to ensure strict adherence to safety regulations and sustain Nigeria’s improving ratings with the World Meteorological Organisation and the International Civil Aviation Organisation.

NiMet obtained the certification after undergoing a third-party audit of its aeronautical meteorological products and services at the three airports by Certech Inc., Canada.

The audit, conducted between July 20 and 23, 2026, established that NiMet’s services complied with the requirements of the ISO 9001:2015 standard.

The newly certified locations are Yola Modibbo Adama International Airport, Sam Mbakwe International Airport, Owerri, and Osubi Airport.

NiMet was also recertified under the ISO 9001:2015 standard at Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos; Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport, Kano; Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja; Enugu International Airport; and Port Harcourt International Airport, Omagwa.

The certification is valid for three years and will be subjected to annual surveillance and maintenance audits, with the next recertification exercise scheduled for 2029.

In a July 26, 2026 letter to Anosike, Certech’s Lead Auditor and Director, Frank Strohmeier, said the objectives of the surveillance audit had been achieved.

The letter, titled “ISO 9001:2015,” said the audit involved a systematic assessment of NiMet’s processes, with emphasis on risks and objectives in line with ISO 9001:2015 requirements.

Following the exercise, Certech issued a revised certificate confirming that NiMet’s quality management system conforms to ISO 9001:2015 requirements for providing meteorological services to the aviation industry.

The agency described the latest development as significant, noting that it represents the first ISO 9001:2015 certification audit of its Aeronautical Meteorological products and services at Yola, Osubi and Owerri airports.

Reacting to the achievement, Anosike commended NiMet’s Quality Management System team, led by Rotimi Adenubi, for its commitment to improving the agency’s operational standards.

“We are excited about this. Our Quality Management System (QMS) team led by Rotimi Adenubi have been working round the clock to achieve this feat.

“We are not stopping here as management is focused on overall improvement of standards at all our operational locations,” he said.

NiMet said the certification reflects its ongoing efforts to improve the quality, reliability and international compliance of meteorological services supporting Nigeria’s aviation sector.

The agency added that the certification and recertification exercises would further consolidate its quality management framework across Nigeria’s airports and support improved aviation safety and operational efficiency.
