Nigerians have reacted to the news of the sudden demise of Rosemary Oromoni, the mother of Sylvester Oromoni, the Dowen College student who tragically passed away in 2021.
It was gathered that her death occurred in late November, following a battle with intermittent blood pressure-related health issues.
Her death follows a difficult time for the Oromoni family, especially after a special court ruling in April 2024, cleared Dowen College and its staff of any responsibility in Sylvester’s death.
X users slammed the country’s corrupt system for failing to deliver justice for the family and for enabling her death. @200_millions said: “Nigeria has killed more citizens than natural causes! When Nigeria happens, you loathe it with everything you have. But how many of Nigeria’s more than 200 million citizens should wait for it to happen to them before declaring that the country is failing and advocating for its dissolution.”
Another user, @OloriofallOloris said: “I’ll never understand how a child’s last words before he died detailed how he was bullied and forced to drink something he didn’t know, yet the school, the accused, and the autopsy found a way to completely overturn it, and nothing was done. Everybody just moved on. This is wickedness. They destroyed this family! This just ruined my day.”

@ManofWhispers: “Everybody in the chain of this negligence, impunity and injustice; down to the parents who currently patronize Dowen College today are all reminders of how messed up our society is.”
@olaniyi_wale said: “The country failed the family even though they are rich. If care is not taken, injustice will reach everyone if we, as a country, don’t rise against any form of injustice.”
Users also claim that Rosemary’s health deteriorated following the legal setback and the emotional toll of losing her son under such controversial circumstances.
@Ehi_ella: “One of the saddest stories of the year. A son that was denied justice, a mother who died from grief. I hope nemesis and her spawn provide divine retribution to those who evaded man-made justice.”
@Obisam20 seconded, saying “very sad news… the love of a mother is so strong … She couldn’t get over the shock of the demise of her son… may her soul rest in peace.”
