Nigerians have taken to social media to debate the case of a woman who allegedly returned to street begging after reportedly receiving an apartment, furniture, a phone and ₦300,000 in financial support in Abuja.

Key Highlights

  • A woman reportedly returned to street begging after allegedly receiving an apartment, furniture, a phone and ₦300,000 in Abuja.
  • Influencer Lucky Udu was said to have secured the apartment for her, with two years’ rent reportedly paid.
  • She allegedly left the accommodation, later resumed begging in Lagos after moving from Abuja.
  • Reactions on X ranged from accusations of dependency on begging to calls for a stronger child welfare system.
  • Some commenters called for proper investigation into her circumstances before judging her actions.
  • The debate expanded into wider discussion of poverty, rehabilitation and whether direct cash assistance is enough.

The woman’s situation has sparked divided reactions online, with some X users questioning why she allegedly rejected the opportunity to become financially independent, while others argued that poverty, dependency and inadequate welfare systems could be behind her decision.

The controversy resurfaced after reports claimed that influencer Lucky Udu had previously secured an apartment for the woman in Abuja, with two years’ rent reportedly paid.

She was also said to have received furnitures, a phone and ₦300,000 to enable her to start a business.

However, according to the reports circulating, the woman allegedly left the accommodation and later returned to street begging.

It was further claimed that she had received other forms of assistance in Abuja before moving to Lagos, where she reportedly resumed begging.

Reactions Split Over Dependency And Welfare

The development immediately triggered a wave of reactions, with some Nigerians questioning whether repeated direct assistance can solve the problem of people who have become dependent on begging.

Reacting, @omotadejohnjay argued that financial assistance should be properly structured rather than simply handed out.

“Financial assistance can be organized else it becomes a tool for stupidity,” he wrote.

He further claimed that begging could become a source of income for some people, adding that people who give money to beggars also contribute to keeping the practice attractive.

@billadamsok called for proper investigation into the woman’s circumstances and argued that transitioning from street begging to formal work may not happen immediately.

“Proper investigation should be carried out. Right from the day you paid it for her, you should have monitored her,” he said.

He added that some people could become accustomed to receiving money on the streets and may struggle to immediately adjust to another means of livelihood.

Similarly, @Abr26266A suggested that the woman could have developed a dependency on begging.

“It’s not her fault she’s actually addicted to begging. No matter what thing good she might have, she still beg. It’s already part of lifestyle,” he wrote.

He also called for attention to be paid to the woman’s children.

Calls For Stronger Child Welfare System

Meanwhile, @FadoroTobi shifted the conversation towards child welfare, arguing that Nigeria needs a stronger system capable of protecting vulnerable children.

“This is why we need a new Nigeria. A functional Child services system would absorb those kids immediately till they’re 18,” the user wrote.

Another commenter, @nijathink, called for an investigation into the woman’s family situation and made an allegation about her children, although no evidence was provided to support the claim.

Some reactions, however, focused on the difficulty of poverty.

@MrDfesy wrote: “It’s crazy how poverty don’t even let people think for themselves.”

Another user, @abobby200, joked about the irony of people needing assistance but struggling to attract the same attention.

“Me way need help una no see me. Watin way no need ham na him una see, life no balance,” the commenter wrote.

Mixed Reactions Online

Others were more critical of the woman’s alleged decision to return to the streets.

Barrister tofz (@rd_tofz) expressed frustration over situations where people reject assistance despite being in difficult circumstances.

“Omo… this woman dey craze!! That’s why some people don’t help oo,” he wrote.

@Life, Facts & Everything in Between suggested that the woman could be returning to begging because of the money she allegedly makes from it.

“She’s obviously seeing lots on gain on the streets,” the account wrote.

Another commenter, @lfymaleeq, took a completely different approach, asking whether the apartment reportedly provided to the woman was still available.

“Abeg the house rent still dey available? I have need of the house abeg,” the user wrote.

The debate has since expanded beyond the woman herself, with Nigerians discussing poverty, street begging, child welfare, rehabilitation and whether direct cash assistance is enough to help people escape difficult circumstances. Follow us on X for more trending stories.
