Nigeria has recorded 1,000 confirmed cases of Lassa fever and 237 deaths across 23 states and 116 local government areas, according to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC).

The latest figures were contained in the NCDC’s epidemiological Week 30 report, which showed that 17 new confirmed cases and six deaths were recorded during the week.

The number of suspected cases also increased to 6,960 nationwide.

According to the report, 227 new suspected cases were recorded in Week 30, representing an increase from the 173 cases reported in Week 29.

However, confirmed cases declined from 20 in Week 29 to 17 in Week 30.

The cumulative figures increased from 983 confirmed cases and 231 deaths in Week 29 to 1,000 confirmed cases and 237 deaths in Week 30.

The development means that Nigeria has now recorded 237 deaths from the disease amid its continued spread across the country.

Despite the decline in weekly confirmed cases, the NCDC warned that the continued detection of infections and deaths underscores the need for sustained vigilance, early diagnosis and prompt medical intervention.

The agency urged Nigerians to take preventive measures to reduce the risk of contracting the disease, particularly by maintaining clean surroundings and preventing rodent infestation.

The NCDC also advised residents to store food in tightly covered containers, dispose of waste properly and avoid practices that could attract rodents.

It urged anyone experiencing symptoms including fever, weakness, headache or bleeding to seek medical attention promptly.

Lassa fever is a viral disease primarily transmitted to humans through contact with food or household items contaminated by infected rodents, with early diagnosis and treatment considered critical to improving outcomes.
