The Mexican government has approved Reno Omokri’s appointment as Nigeria’s ambassador to Mexico, clearing a major diplomatic hurdle eight months after the process began.
Key Highlights
- Mexico grants agrément for Reno Omokri as Nigeria’s ambassador.
- Approval comes eight months after Tinubu approved his appointment in March 2026.
- Omokri will also cover Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua through concurrent accreditation.
- Date for presentation of credentials not yet confirmed.
The approval, known as agrément, was communicated to Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs through José Manuel Briseño Flores, Chargé d’Affaires of the Mexican Embassy in Abuja.
The document was reportedly delivered to Babagana Wakil, the ministry’s director of protocol.
Eight-Month Wait For Diplomatic Consent
President Bola Tinubu approved Omokri’s appointment in March 2026 as part of a broader list of ambassador-designates.
However, he could not formally assume the position until the Mexican government granted the required diplomatic consent.
Omokri is also expected to serve as Nigeria’s ambassador to Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua through concurrent accreditation, extending his diplomatic responsibilities to four countries.
The approval comes amid previous concerns over delays in obtaining diplomatic clearance for some Nigerian ambassador-designates.
In August, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said engagements were ongoing with countries that had yet to communicate their decisions on certain nominations.

Omokri, a former media aide to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, is known for his political commentary and contributions to public debates on Nigerian affairs.
With Mexico’s approval secured, a key requirement for his appointment has been fulfilled.
However, the date for his formal assumption of duties and presentation of credentials has not been confirmed in the reports available.
Agrément is the formal consent a receiving country must grant before a nominated diplomat can be appointed to serve as an ambassador in that country.
