Lionel Messi is mourning the death of his father and long-time adviser, Jorge Messi, who reportedly died at the age of 68 after a prolonged illness.

Key Highlights

  • Lionel Messi’s father and long-time adviser, Jorge Messi, has reportedly died at 68 after a prolonged illness.
  • Jorge played a major role in helping Messi access growth hormone treatment as a child.
  • He accompanied Messi to Spain when the footballer joined Barcelona at age 13.
  • Jorge later managed key aspects of Messi’s professional and commercial affairs.
  • His guidance and support were instrumental in Messi’s journey to becoming a global football icon.
Jorge reportedly passed away at about 10pm on Friday at a medical facility in Rosario, Argentina, according to Argentine media reports cited by international football publications.
Beyond being Messi’s father, Jorge played a major role in the decisions that shaped the football career of the Argentine superstar.
When Messi was a young player at Newell’s Old Boys, Jorge was instrumental in helping his son access medical treatment after it became clear that he needed growth hormone therapy.
Following difficulties in securing the required treatment in Argentina, the family eventually turned their attention to Spain, a decision that would change Messi’s life and football career forever.
Messi joined Barcelona at the age of 13, with Jorge accompanying him during the early stages of his life in Spain. He supported his son as he adjusted to a new country while the rest of the family remained in Rosario.
Messi later recalled that his father stood firmly by him during those difficult years and allowed him to decide whether to continue his football development in Spain or return home.
The young Messi opted to remain in Spain, eventually developing into one of the greatest footballers in history.
As his son’s career blossomed, Jorge became increasingly involved in managing his affairs, handling commercial negotiations and other matters away from the pitch.
Despite his influential role, Jorge generally kept a low public profile and rarely sought the spotlight.
He occasionally spoke about Messi’s career, expressing pride not only in his son’s achievements on the pitch but also in his character away from football.
Questions surrounding Jorge’s health emerged earlier in 2026, although the family largely kept details of his condition private.

Jorge began his professional career in Argentina’s steel industry, where he eventually rose to a managerial position.
He also had football experience in his youth, having played in the ranks of Newell’s Old Boys before leaving the sport following his military service.
He and his wife, Celia Cuccittini, had four children: Lionel, Rodrigo, Matias and Maria Sol.
While Lionel Messi went on to become a global sporting icon, Jorge remained largely behind the scenes.
His guidance, sacrifices and support during his son’s formative years nevertheless played a significant role in Messi’s journey from a young talent in Rosario to one of the most decorated footballers in the history of the game.
