The controversy began after Keane, speaking on The Overlap podcast, suggested Fernandes was more focused on breaking the Premier League assists record than helping Manchester United win trophies following the club’s 3-2 victory over Nottingham Forest F.C..
Keane reportedly described Fernandes’ mentality as “a circus act,” questioning whether the midfielder’s pursuit of personal milestones aligned with the standards expected at Manchester United.
However, Fernandes has firmly denied the claims, insisting his comments after the match were taken out of context and misrepresented.
Speaking on The Diary of a CEO podcast, the Manchester United captain clarified that his focus had always been on the team’s performance and ending the season positively.
“I don’t mind criticism… what I don’t like is when people lie about things,” Fernandes stated, maintaining that Keane attributed comments to him that he never made.

The Portugal international explained that his post-match remarks simply reflected satisfaction with the victory while acknowledging moments where he could have made better decisions in attack.
Fernandes also revealed that he attempted to contact Keane through former Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in order to address the issue privately.
The midfielder enjoyed another influential campaign for Manchester United, recording over 20 assists alongside 21 goals in all competitions, helping the club secure a top-three Premier League finish and qualification for the UEFA Champions League.
