The Labour Party’s (LP) Edo 2024 governorship candidate, Olumide Osaigbovo Akpata, has dismissed claims that he plans to withdraw from the race. Akpata issued a statement on September 20, 2024, categorically denying any intention to step down or support another candidate ahead of tomorrow’s crucial election.

Akpata, a prominent legal figure, called out what he termed as “the wicked rumor” suggesting that he had backed out of the race to support the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) candidate. He described the rumor as a deliberate attempt by those in power to destabilize his campaign, labeling the false report as part of the “evil machinations” of political figures who have held Edo State “captive for a quarter of a century.”

“I am still in this race,” Akpata emphasized, expressing his resolve to continue his candidacy. He described the notion of him stepping down as absurd, especially given the overwhelming support he has received from the people of Edo State. He further criticized the attempt at misinformation as poorly executed, noting that the forged document used to spread the false information contained errors, including an incorrect date.

Addressing the perpetrators behind the fake news, Akpata said their desperate tactics only exposed their fear of his campaign’s growing momentum. “Your actions betray your panic at our unstoppable momentum,” he said, urging journalists to take care in reporting facts and verifying information before publication.

Akpata also vowed to pursue legal action against those involved in fabricating and spreading the rumor. He stressed that he would not rest until the individuals behind the falsehood are identified and prosecuted. “You will face the full force of the law, and justice will be served,” he stated.

To his supporters, Akpata delivered a message of hope and resilience. He urged them to ignore the deceptive tactics and focus on the transformative leadership his campaign promises for Edo State. “Do not be swayed by these desperate ploys. Our resolve is unshakeable, our cause is just, and our vision for our great state remains clear and unwavering,” he assured.
