Argentine football legend Lionel Messi has officially acquired Spanish fifth-tier club Cornella, strengthening his ties to Catalonia and local football development.
The 38-year-old forward, currently playing for Major League Soccer side Inter Miami, has had a decorated career, winning four Champions League titles and ten La Liga championships with Barcelona.
Cornella announced that “eight-time Ballon d’Or winner Leo Messi has formalised the acquisition of the club,” highlighting his commitment to nurturing local talent.
Messi, who left Argentina for Spain at age 13, debuted for Barcelona’s first team in October 2004.
He scored a club-record 672 goals in 778 appearances before moving to Paris Saint-Germain in 2021, and later joining Inter Miami in 2023.

Cornella, with a 1,500-capacity stadium, has historically produced top-level talent, including Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya and former Barcelona defender Jordi Alba.
The club’s statement said: “Leo Messi’s arrival marks the beginning of a new chapter in the club’s history, aimed at driving sporting and institutional growth, strengthening its foundations, and continuing to invest in talent.
“The project is guided by a long-term vision and a strategic plan that combines ambition, sustainability, and a strong connection to its local roots.”
Messi’s acquisition mirrors the trend of football legends investing in clubs.
In February, former rival Cristiano Ronaldo purchased a 25% stake in Spanish side Almeria, while John Terry and other ex-professionals have also joined the ownership ranks of lower-league teams.
Messi’s move is seen as a blend of passion for grassroots football and a strategic investment in the sport’s future in Catalonia.
