The footage, reportedly recorded on June 21, 2026, showed individuals believed to be members of the Lakurawa Militants moving around communities, including Zugurma in Borgu Local Government Area and other locations within Mashegu Local Government Area.
Although no attack or violent incident was reported during the movement, the visible presence of the armed group has heightened fears among residents due to the group’s alleged links to extremist networks and reports of its growing influence across parts of northern Nigeria.
The Lakurawa Militants, designated as a terrorist organisation by the Nigerian government in 2025, were initially reported to have emerged as a community-based vigilante movement operating in parts of Sokoto and Kebbi states.

However, security agencies and analysts have since linked the group’s transformation to extremist ideologies associated with Islamic State-affiliated networks.
According to security assessments, the group has reportedly employed religious messaging and community engagement activities as a strategy to gain acceptance and establish influence before expanding its operations.
The latest reported sighting of Lakurawa Militants in Niger State has renewed concerns over security in border communities and forest regions, where criminal and extremist groups often exploit difficult terrain and limited security presence to establish operational bases.
Residents have questioned how the suspected militants were able to move openly through communities without immediate intervention from security agencies. Some attributed the situation to porous borders, intelligence gaps, and inadequate security coverage in vulnerable rural areas.
As of June 22, 2026, neither the Nigerian Police Force nor military authorities had issued an official statement regarding the reported movement of the suspected militants.
Security experts have continued to stress the importance of intelligence gathering, early detection, and rapid response mechanisms to prevent armed groups from establishing deeper roots in new locations.
They warned that allowing such groups to gain a foothold in forest corridors and remote communities could further complicate efforts to tackle insecurity across the region.
Authorities are expected to investigate the footage, verify the identities of those captured in the videos, and provide further information on measures being taken to address the concerns raised by residents.
