European Central Bank (ECB) President, Christine Lagarde has announced her resignation, ending months of speculation about her future as the eurozone grapples with inflationary pressures, rising borrowing costs and economic uncertainty.

Key Highlights

  • Christine Lagarde is stepping down as ECB President, with an expected exit on February 7, 2027.
  • Her tenure was originally scheduled to end in October 2027.
  • The early exit gives EU leaders time to name a successor before France’s presidential election.
  • Klaas Knot and Pablo Hernández de Cos are seen as leading contenders.
  • The ECB faces renewed inflation from energy costs and rising bond yields.

Lagarde was expected to leave office on February 7, 2027, ahead of the end of her scheduled tenure in October 2027.

Her early departure will give European Union leaders time to appoint a successor before France’s presidential election, amid projections that far-right candidate Marine Le Pen could emerge victorious.

The ECB confirmed the development in a statement on Thursday, disclosing that Lagarde has informed the bank’s governing council and European Council President, António Costa of her decision to step down.

Former central bank governors Klaas Knot of the Netherlands and Pablo Hernández de Cos of Spain have been identified as leading contenders to succeed her.

Inflation, Bond Yields Weigh On ECB

Lagarde’s resignation comes at a challenging period for the ECB, which is battling renewed inflationary pressures triggered by rising energy costs amid the war involving Iran.

The central bank has been increasing interest rates to prevent higher oil prices from fuelling broader inflation, particularly through rising consumer prices and wage demands.

However, the ECB must also contend with rising government bond yields, especially in heavily indebted France, where increased borrowing costs are putting additional pressure on households and businesses.

Lagarde has warned that tighter financing conditions could undermine economic growth while influencing the inflation outlook across the eurozone.

Against this backdrop, the ECB was widely expected to keep its deposit rate at 2.5 percent at its Thursday meeting, while signalling the possibility of another increase, potentially as early as December.

The bank’s interest rate decision was scheduled for 1:15 p.m. GMT on Thursday, with Lagarde expected to address the media at a press conference 30 minutes later.

What Next For Lagarde

Meanwhile, speculation about Lagarde’s future had intensified in recent months, with the World Economic Forum mentioned as a possible destination after her departure from the ECB.

Her resignation sets the stage for a leadership transition at a critical time for the eurozone, as policymakers seek to balance efforts to contain inflation with the need to sustain economic growth and maintain financial stability.
