Tragedy struck in the Okpanam community near Asaba, the Delta State capital, as a vigilante member, Mr. Samuel Okoro, was shot dead by suspected kidnappers while attempting to rescue some abducted victims on Sunday.
It was learnt that the kidnappers had abducted several individuals in the community and moved them into the nearby bush.
Mr. Okoro, who sighted the criminals while on patrol, courageously attempted to trail them but was ambushed and fatally shot by the suspects, who had noticed his pursuit.
The Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, confirmed the incident in a telephone conversation with journalists, describing the killing as unfortunate and preventable.
“Yes, the man is a vigilante in Okpanam and was killed by kidnappers. We heard that Mr. Okoro saw the kidnappers in the bush and was trailing them before they shot him,” Edafe stated.
“We are advising other vigilante members to always inform the police before taking action, especially in dangerous situations involving armed criminals.”
