The Kano State government has approved the merger of the Ministry of Higher Education with the Ministry of Education as part of efforts to strengthen coordination and accelerate reforms in the state’s education sector.

Governor Abba Yusuf in a statement issued by his spokesperson, Sanusi Bature, announced the approved restructuring on Sunday.

The statement said the new structure would operate under a single Ministry of Education, with the establishment of a specialised directorate of higher education to oversee tertiary education activities across the state.

Under the arrangement, the directorate of higher education will be headed by a permanent secretary and supported by relevant personnel to ensure the effective management and supervision of higher institutions in the state.

The statement added that agencies previously under the defunct Ministry of Higher Education, including the state scholarship board, would now return to the Ministry of Education.

It further explained that all state-owned universities and other higher education institutions would be supervised by the newly created directorate within the merged ministry.

According to the government, the move forms part of broader reforms being implemented under the ongoing education sector restructuring programme in the state.

The reforms are aimed at repositioning the education sector through improved policy coordination across all levels of learning, elimination of overlapping responsibilities and reduction in the cost of governance.

Gov. Yusuf said the restructuring is designed to enhance efficiency and accountability in the administration of education in the state.

He reiterated that his administration remained committed to implementing far-reaching reforms that would revive the education sector and secure a better future for the younger generation in Kano State.

Consequently, the governor directed the office of the secretary to the state government and the office of the head of service to ensure the immediate and seamless realignment of the affected ministries and their respective departments.
