Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has formally transmitted the nomination of Murtala Sule Garo to the Kano State House of Assembly for screening and confirmation as deputy governor, setting the stage for a key political decision in the state.
The move, confirmed in a statement by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, follows the resignation of former deputy governor Abdussalam Gwarzo on March 27, 2026. The governor invoked constitutional provisions that empower him to fill the vacancy, while urging lawmakers to act without delay.
Garo, 48, enters the spotlight with a long record in Kano politics. Over the years, he has held strategic roles across party and government structures, including State Organising Secretary, Special Adviser to the governor, and Chairman of Kabo Local Government Area. He also served as Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs and led the Kano chapter of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria.

His political profile gained wider attention during the 2023 general elections when he emerged as the deputy governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress in Kano State. That experience, coupled with his administrative background, is expected to weigh heavily during the Assembly’s screening process.
Sources within government circles say the nomination followed extensive consultations with political stakeholders, a move seen as an effort to stabilise the state’s leadership structure after weeks of uncertainty.
Observers note that the choice of Garo signals a strategic calculation by the Yusuf administration to strengthen governance and maintain political balance in Kano. The coming days will be crucial as the Assembly deliberates on the nomination, a process that could reshape the dynamics within the state’s executive arm.
