In a shocking revelation there is celebration in the camp of Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori following the arrest of former governor and recent PDP vice presidential candidate, Ifeanyi Okowa. The arrest, reportedly conducted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), centers around allegations of misappropriating the state’s 13% oil derivation funds.

In an exclusive conversation with The Trumpet, a senior official at the Delta State Government House expressed satisfaction, stating, “This arrest was long overdue.” According to the official, Okowa’s dominant influence on state affairs has, in their view, hindered Governor Oborevwori’s leadership, particularly in fulfilling promises to his core supporters.

Another government official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, added that Oborevwori has been working to maintain a cordial relationship with his predecessor to prevent a political fallout similar to the ongoing rift between Rivers State Governor Sim Fubara and FCT Minister Nyesom Wike despite the overbearing attitude of the former governor. However, this arrest has reportedly provided a new avenue for the current administration to establish itself more firmly.

The EFCC’s arrest of Okowa comes amid growing demands for accountability over Delta State’s 13% derivation funds. Advocacy groups, including the Delta State Oil Producing Communities and the Network Against Corruption and Trafficking Initiative (NACAT), have voiced allegations that approximately N1.2 trillion earmarked for community development under Okowa’s administration was misappropriated, leading to ongoing poverty and neglect in the oil-producing regions.

In a statement, the advocacy groups accused Okowa of diverting the derivation funds to non-essential projects or personal interests, stating, “Despite Delta State’s oil wealth, our communities remain impoverished and environmentally degraded.” The arrest marks a significant step in addressing these allegations, sparking renewed calls for transparency and justice from the people of Delta State.

News of the arrest has not only fueled jubilation among Oborevwori’s supporters but has also intensified public calls for reforms to ensure state funds benefit oil-rich communities. As the investigation continues, Delta State residents are watching closely to see if justice will be served and if the state’s wealth will finally bring about the development and prosperity long promised.
