The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has warned Nigerian universities against issuing admission letters to candidates, insisting that only the board is legally empowered to issue official admission documents for entry into tertiary institutions.

- JAMB warns universities against issuing their own admission letters to candidates.
- Registrar Prof. Segun Aina says only JAMB can legally issue official admission letters.
- Candidates must accept offers on CAPS before obtaining the official JAMB admission letter.
- Only admissions recognised through CAPS will count for NYSC mobilisation.
JAMB Registrar, Prof. Segun Aina, issued the warning while receiving a delegation from Veritas University, Bwari, Abuja, which visited his office.
According to the registrar, universities that issue their own admission letters risk misleading candidates into believing they have secured valid admission, even when the documents do not meet the requirements stipulated by the board.
Aina said JAMB remains the only statutory authority authorised to issue official admission letters to candidates seeking admission into universities, polytechnics and colleges of education across Nigeria.
He urged institutions involved in the practice to desist, stressing that they also had a responsibility to ensure that admitted candidates obtained the appropriate documents from JAMB.
The registrar expressed concern that candidates often regard admission letters issued by institutions as genuine without verifying whether they comply with the board’s admission procedures.
Admissions Outside CAPS Invalid
He recalled that the Federal Ministry of Education had directed tertiary institutions to conduct admissions through JAMB’s Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS), warning that any admission process carried out outside the approved platform was illegal and invalid.
Under the arrangement, candidates must accept their admission offers through CAPS before obtaining the official admission letter issued by JAMB.

Aina warned that institutions could not substitute their own admission letters for the official documents issued by the board, insisting that compliance with the established process was mandatory.
He further stated that only admissions recognised through CAPS would be accepted for purposes including mobilisation for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).
The warning comes amid concerns over admission procedures and the need to ensure that candidates seeking placement in Nigerian tertiary institutions receive valid offers recognised by the relevant authorities.
JAMB regulates admissions into tertiary institutions in Nigeria and operates CAPS to facilitate the processing, monitoring and acceptance of admission offers.
