Nollywood actress and filmmaker Iyabo Ojo has accused a Ghanaian television station of airing her newly released film, The Memory of You Part 2, without her permission less than 24 hours after it premiered on YouTube.

Key Highlights

  • Iyabo Ojo accused a Ghanaian television station, North East TV, of airing her film The Memory of You Part 2 without authorization.
  • The actress said the movie was broadcast less than 24 hours after its YouTube premiere.
  • Ojo described the unauthorized airing as piracy, saying it threatens filmmakers’ ability to recover production costs.
  • She expressed disappointment that the station allegedly aired the film without seeking her permission.
  • The filmmaker argued that piracy deprives content creators of legitimate revenue from platforms such as YouTube.

In a video shared on her Instagram page on Saturday, the actress alleged that North East TV in Ghana broadcast the movie without obtaining authorization, describing the action as piracy and a major setback for filmmakers who rely on legitimate views and distribution to recover production costs.

Expressing disappointment, Ojo said she was shocked to discover that the film had already been aired on television shortly after its online release.

“I found out that there’s this TV station called North East TV in Ghana already showing my movie on their TV channel. I don’t understand. I didn’t give you permission. I don’t know you,” she said.

The actress lamented that such unauthorized broadcasts deprive producers of revenue earned through platforms like YouTube.

“You just took my movie that I posted on my YouTube channel, not even up to 24 hours, and put it on your TV for people to watch for free while you make money. How do we make our money back?” she queried.

Ojo appealed to the Ghana National Film Authority, the country’s Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, and President to intervene, arguing that piracy continues to undermine the creative industry.

According to her, filmmakers invest heavily in production by paying actors and crew, securing filming locations, costumes, accommodation, equipment, and other logistics, making unauthorized broadcasts financially damaging.

The controversy has reignited conversations about cross-border piracy and copyright protection within Africa’s film industry, with many calling for stronger collaboration between Nigerian and Ghanaian authorities to tackle unauthorized distribution of creative content.
