The Isoko nation is gearing up for the much-anticipated 2nd edition of its table tennis tournament, which will kick off on November 7, 2025, in Oleh, Delta State. The announcement was made during a press briefing at the Isoko Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Secretariat by the tournament initiator and organizer, Comrade Palmer Ogheneyole Nathaniel.

Nathaniel explained that the tournament was conceived to unite the 23 clans of Isoko nation under one roof in the spirit of competition, sportsmanship, and ancestral brotherhood. He noted that beyond fostering unity, the championship is also designed to identify and nurture young talents who can represent Isoko on both national and international stages.

Highlighting the success of the maiden edition, Nathaniel revealed that some players who featured in last year’s games went on to win medals at the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) competitions, bringing pride to the Isoko people.

As part of preparations for this year’s edition, more than 30 brand new table tennis boards have been acquired for distribution to communities. Individuals with genuine interest in the sport can also apply to own a board for private use, provided they commit to its proper care.

Nathaniel stressed that participation in the tournament is strictly reserved for indigenes of Isoko, either paternally or maternally, including those from clans spread across Delta and Bayelsa states. He described table tennis as a sport that not only entertains but also improves fitness and helps prevent ailments linked to sedentary lifestyles.

In addition to the new facilities, selected players from last year’s edition will receive professional spin bats to aid their training. This year’s tournament also comes with a mouthwatering prize pool of N10 million, with the overall winner set to take home N3 million, the runner-up N2 million, and the third-place winner N1 million, among other rewards.

Nathaniel further stated that the competition is being held in honor of Delta State Governor, His Excellency Elder Sheriff Oborevwori, praising the governor’s leadership and the developmental strides of his administration in Isoko land.

The Isoko table tennis tournament, now in its second year, is already gaining attention as one of the fastest-rising sporting events in the Niger Delta, combining community pride, talent discovery, and the promise of life-changing opportunities for local athletes.
