Tensions in the Gulf region have escalated after Iran accused the United States of attacking one of its commercial vessels in the Sea of Oman, vowing to respond once the safety of civilians onboard is secured.
A spokesperson for the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said Iranian forces were initially prepared to retaliate immediately following the incident but refrained due to the presence of crew members’ families aboard the vessel.
According to the statement, concerns over civilian safety prompted a temporary pause in any military response, as authorities prioritised securing those onboard.
“Iran’s armed forces were ready to act without delay,” the spokesperson noted, “but the presence of non-combatants required restraint to avoid further risk to innocent lives.”

Iran has not disclosed full details of the alleged attack, including the extent of damage or casualties, but insisted that the situation is being closely monitored.
Officials in Iran say efforts are ongoing to ensure the safe evacuation or protection of those on the vessel.
Once that objective is achieved, the country’s military will take what it described as “appropriate and decisive action.”
There has been no immediate response from the United States Department of Defense regarding the allegation.
The incident comes amid heightened geopolitical tensions in the wider Gulf region, particularly around key maritime routes such as the Sea of Oman, a critical corridor for global oil shipments.
Analysts warn that any escalation between Iran and the United States could have significant implications for regional security and international trade.
