An American psychologist, Jeffrey Guterman, has appealed to United States President Donald Trump to deploy additional American troops to Nigeria, citing the country’s escalating security challenges, including mass killings, kidnappings and insurgent attacks.

Key Highlights:

  • Jeffrey Guterman urged Donald Trump to send more U.S. troops to Nigeria.
  • He cited killings, kidnappings, and terrorism as major security threats.
  • He said both Christians and Muslims are affected by the violence.
  • The appeal comes amid ongoing insecurity despite government efforts.
  • He called for stronger U.S. support to help improve security in Nigeria.

Guterman made the appeal through the White House’s official public communication platform, where citizens and residents can submit messages directly to the U.S. President.

In a message later shared on social media, he called for stronger American intervention to help address the persistent violence affecting communities across Nigeria.

According to him, the security situation in the country has reached alarming levels, with both Christians and Muslims falling victim to attacks by armed groups. He argued that the widespread nature of the violence requires a more robust international response.

“I appeal for President Trump to send more troops to Nigeria. The violence is ubiquitous, including mass murder and kidnappings,” Guterman wrote in his message to the U.S. leader.

His appeal comes amid growing concern over Nigeria’s security landscape, where terrorist activities, banditry, kidnappings for ransom and communal clashes continue to threaten lives and livelihoods in several regions of the country.

Despite repeated assurances from the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu that efforts are being intensified to restore peace and security, attacks have continued in parts of the North-East, North-West and North-Central regions, while incidents of abduction and violent crime remain a major concern nationwide.

In recent months, fresh cases of school kidnappings, attacks on rural communities and deadly assaults by armed groups have sparked public outrage, prompting calls from civil society organisations, religious leaders and opposition figures for more decisive action.

Guterman’s intervention adds to broader international discussions surrounding Nigeria’s security challenges.

The United States and Nigeria have maintained security cooperation over the years, particularly in counterterrorism operations, intelligence sharing and military partnerships aimed at combating extremist groups.

Several American lawmakers have also raised concerns about violence in Nigeria through congressional hearings, policy debates and resolutions urging greater efforts to tackle terrorism, religious violence and human rights abuses.

The psychologist specifically urged the Trump administration to deepen its military engagement in Nigeria, arguing that the scale of the crisis warrants increased support from international partners.

His call comes at a time when Nigerian authorities continue to face mounting pressure from citizens and advocacy groups demanding stronger measures to protect communities and curb the recurring attacks that have claimed hundreds of lives across the country.
