  • Expresses command’s readiness to tackle cross-border crimes
The Sokoto State Commissioner of Police, CP Muhammad Usaini Gumel, on Thursday, addressed the members of the State’s House of Assembly seeking their legislative support to combat crime and insecurity in the State.

CP Gumel embarked on the visit alongside his management team as part of his assumption of duty tour. He said there is a need for a legislative framework that enables security operatives to tackle some of the security challenges in the State.

According to a statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer of the Command, DSP Sanusi Abubakar, the CP assured the honourable members of the readiness of the Command to tackle cross-border crimes in the State.

The statement said, “The Commissioner of Police, Sokoto State Police Command, CP Muhammad Usaini Gumel FIPMA, psc had on 25th August 2022 visited Sokoto State house of assembly alongside his management team on the occasion of his assumption of duty tour.

“The CP affirmed that the legislative arm of government is the pillar standing between the Judiciary and the Executive arms and it’s being the top machinery of government providing succour to the population and of course critical to development, unity, peace and security.

“On the foregoing, the police command being part of the executive arm of government is looking for a robust convocation by honourable members to have the right legislations on government policies, enactment of laws that have a direct bearing on solutions to the ongoing insecurity.

“The CP added that the narrative of internal security has changed over time and on this note encouraged Hon. Members bring up necessary legislation in support of the police to acquire the right technology, equipment and other needed support to function effectively.

“The Deputy Speaker of House of Assembly Sokoto warmly welcomed the CP together with the house leaders, honourable members and clerk to the house. The Deputy Speaker in his response extends on behalf of the house their condolences to the Command over the death of six mobile policemen, who met their untimely death in a gun duel with bandits while protecting transiting pilgrims and securing their return unhurt.

“While reiterating his commitment to partner with the police, he assured the CP of the house’s readiness to support the police with all necessary legislation needed to fight the menace of banditry and other crimes.”
