The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has restored six previously suppressed State Assembly constituencies in Delta State and fixed June 16 to 25, 2026, for political parties to conduct primaries for the constituencies ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Key Highlights:

  • Independent National Electoral Commission restored six Delta State Assembly constituencies ahead of the 2027 elections.
  • The move followed court judgments affecting constituencies in Delta, Benue, Jigawa, and Kogi states.
  • Political parties are to hold primaries for the affected seats from June 16–25, 2026.
  • The restored Delta constituencies include Aniocha North II, Warri South West II, and others.
  • INEC says the decision ensures full participation in the 2027 general elections.

The decision was announced in a press release issued on Wednesday by the National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Kudu Haruna.

According to the Commission, the restoration followed court judgments directing the reinstatement of several constituencies in Delta, Benue, Jigawa and Kogi states.

In Delta State, the restored constituencies are Aniocha North II, Ika North East II, Sapele II, Ethiope West II, Warri South West II and Warri North II State Constituencies.

INEC stated that the restoration was carried out pursuant to the provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Electoral Act, 2026, to ensure that the affected constituencies participate fully in the 2027 General Election.

The Commission also restored five constituencies in Benue State, namely Nyamatsor, Ukum Afia, Konshisha III (Shangev-Tiev), Makurdi III (South East) and Gboko III; one constituency in Jigawa State, Aujara; and ten constituencies in Kogi State, including Adavi East, Eika, Ajaokuta North, Bassa-Komu, Dekina Town and District, Ijumu II, Kabba-Bunu II, Koton Karfe II, Igalaogwa and Ogugu.

To facilitate the nomination of candidates for the restored constituencies, INEC directed political parties to conduct their primaries between June 16 and June 25, 2026.

The electoral body clarified that all other timelines and activities contained in the revised timetable and schedule for the 2027 General Election remain applicable to the restored constituencies.

INEC further advised political parties to submit notices of their primaries to the Commission ahead of the scheduled dates, citing the peculiar nature of the arrangement.

The Commission reaffirmed its commitment to conducting credible, inclusive and transparent electoral processes across the country as preparations for the 2027 General Election gather momentum.
