The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says it has enrolled 11,839 new voters in Imo State during the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise, while temporarily halting registration activities in Egbema following reports of security incidents in the area.

Speaking during a live appearance on Groove FM’s The Brief programme in Owerri, the commission’s Head of Voter Education and Publicity in Imo State, Emmanuella Ben-Opara, said the majority of the new registrants are first-time voters, including many Nigerians who recently became eligible after turning 18.
She disclosed that voter registration continues in other parts of the state despite the temporary suspension in Egbema.
“As of June 13, 2026, a total of 11,839 new voters have been registered in Imo State,” Ben-Opara explained, adding that registration would resume in Egbema after security agencies indicated that the situation had improved.

She also noted that INEC personnel remain active in areas such as Orsu Local Government Area, encouraging residents who have not yet registered to take advantage of the exercise.
Ben-Opara reminded voters who have changed residence that they can request a transfer of their polling units to their new locations. She further stressed that participation in future elections will require a valid Permanent Voter Card (PVC), as temporary voter cards will not be accepted on election day.
Also speaking during the programme, INEC Public Affairs Officer in Imo State, Maryann Godslight, assured persons living with disabilities that the commission has put measures in place to make registration and electoral participation more accessible.
According to Godslight, the current CVR exercise has attracted a notably higher turnout than previous rounds, with large numbers of young people visiting registration centres each day.
She added that security personnel have been deployed to both fixed and mobile registration locations across the state to safeguard the process and urged all eligible residents to complete their registration before the exercise concludes.
