The political battle over the future of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has taken a dramatic turn as the party regained access to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) candidate nomination portal, allowing it to push ahead with its 2027 election preparations.

Key Highlights:

  • INEC restored the NDC’s access to its candidate nomination portal.
  • The NDC uploaded the names of Peter Obi (presidential candidate) and Seriake Dickson.
  • The party has appealed the court ruling challenging its registration.
  • Dickson says the NDC remains legally recognised while the appeal is ongoing.
  • The party says it is moving ahead with its 2027 election preparations.

The move comes after days of uncertainty surrounding the party’s participation in the next general elections, following a Federal High Court judgment that created doubts over its registration status.

In a major development, the NDC National Leader, Senator Seriake Dickson, revealed that the party had successfully uploaded the names of its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and himself on the INEC platform.

The development has intensified political discussions ahead of 2027, with the party insisting that the legal battle will not stop its electoral plans.

Sen. Dickson disclosed that the NDC had already filed an appeal against the Lokoja Federal High Court decision and submitted an application seeking a stay of execution.

He said the party remains a legally recognised political organisation pending the determination of the court process.

“The NDC has come to stay,” Dickson said, maintaining that the party’s candidates emerged through primaries conducted under INEC supervision.

According to him, the remaining step is simply the administrative submission of candidates’ details, and the restoration of portal access has cleared the way for that process.

The former Bayelsa State governor assured party members that there was no reason for panic, stressing that the electoral timetable still gives the party enough time to complete the upload process.

The development is expected to reshape the political atmosphere as opposition forces continue positioning themselves for the 2027 contest.

Meanwhile, reconciliation efforts have reportedly begun within the party, with Sen. Dickson promising that all aspirants and supporters would be carried along in campaign structures and party activities.

With Obi’s name now uploaded, the NDC enters a new phase of its political journey ,combining a legal fight in the courts with preparations for what could become one of the most closely watched elections in Nigeria’s recent history.
