West African Action Network on Small Arms (WAANSA), a non-governmental organization, has elected Mr Igwe Martins as the regional Vice President.
WAANSA Nigeria, known for championing the advocacy and fight against the proliferation of small arms in sub-Sahara region, revealed this in a letter dated August 11, 2023, and jointly signed by the President, Temitope Lamidi and Director of Operations, Dr Edafewotu Endurance.
According to the letter, Mr Igwe emergence as the regional Vice President is an attestation of his commitment to the cause and objectives of WAANSA to rid off small arms and light weapons from African continent.
The letter partly reads: “We are pleased to congratulate you on your election at Senegal as the regional Vice President of WAANSA.
“Your victory at the keenly constested election is an attestation of your antecedents, depicting you are ably qualified for this new role.
“We hope in earnest that this new position will further strengthen you to intensify the fight against the proliferation of light and small weapons,” the letter stated.
WAANSA, an appendage of International Action Network on Small Arms (IANSA), is at the forefront of the advocacy against light arms and recently, called on ECOWAS leader, President Bola Tinubu to sign the Small & Light Weapon Bill (SALW Bill) into law.
