How vigilantes killed, burnt 90-year-old man in Sokoto

A 90-year-old man, Muhammad Riskuwa, has been killed and burnt beyond recognition, robbed of N430,000 and his house set ablaze by members of an outlawed vigilance group, who were armed with guns, cutlasses and sticks at Zangon Atti village in Gwadabawa LGA of Sokoto State.

Shehu Mamman, a son of the victim while narrating the ordeal to the police, said he was molding blocks with his father on 21st June, 2022, around 08:00 am when the criminal gang attacked them.

Mamman said one of the hoodlums shot his father dead, while others ransacked the house, made away with the sum of N430,000, set their house ablaze and also burnt the corpse of his father beyond recognition.

DSP Sanusi Abubakar, Police Public Relations Officer of Sokoto Command, said on Friday that a full scale investigation was launched by the police following the report of Mamman, which led to the arrest of six suspects.

“A full scale police investigation was promptly commenced by state CID. Shehu Mamman who recognized identity of some of the assailants led the investigation team to the arrest of Aliyu Abdulrazak and Rabi’u Abdullahi, both members of the outlawed vigilante that lunched the attacks.

“Their arrest further drawn some vital confessions which led to the arrest of other key suspects that physically took part in the commission of the crimes. They are all male residents of the same address as follows: Mustapha Yakubu, Abdul’aziz Suleiman, Abdulbasiru Alhaji Idi, and Isah Musa,” Abubakar said.

He said all the suspects have confessed to committing the crimes, so shall be arraigned in court soon by the police.

In another development, police in the State on Wednesday foiled the kidnap and robbery attempt of hoodlums armed with dangerous weapons after they invaded Tungan liman village, Wurno LGA in two teams and began shooting sporadically.

The hoodlums, who were already breaking and ransacking shops and houses in the village took to their heels following a quick response from the police. Police from Wurno Divisional Police Headquarters gave them a hot chase leading to the recovering of one tecno cell phone, two live ammunitions 62 X 39 mm and a pair of sandals.

Meanwhile, three suspects were arrested by men of the Wamakko Police Station for robbing and attacking one Mamuda Mande on 7th July, 2022. The victim was said to have been dispossessed of N100,000 cash and injured on the head.

Abubakar gave the names of the arrested suspects as Hussaini Harande, Shehu Aliyu, and Aliyu Abubakar. He said the suspects will be arraigned in court immediately police investigation is completed.
