Islamic cleric Sheikh Gumi has denied allegations by a Nigerian man, Nasiru Idris, that he interfered in his marriage and was involved in the disappearance of his Moroccan wife.

Gumi said Idris’ wife had already left Nigeria and returned to Morocco, where she is currently staying with her parents.

The cleric, speaking to reporters, also threatened to institute a defamation suit against Idris, adding that he would not comment extensively because the matter was already before a court.

The denial followed allegations by Idris that he had been unable to reach his Moroccan wife for about 11 months after taking her to Gumi for counselling.

Idris, who spoke in an interview with RFI Hausa, said he took his wife to the cleric because he trusted him as an Islamic scholar and believed he could help resolve issues in their marriage.

According to Idris, his wife stopped responding to his calls after the meeting, prompting him to seek assistance from security agencies.

He alleged that efforts to investigate the matter were obstructed and maintained that his wife had remained away from him for approximately 11 months.

Idris further claimed that Gumi became involved in the couple’s marital dispute and asked him to obtain another marriage certificate from a Sharia Court, despite the couple already having marriage documents from Morocco and Nigeria.

The husband said he presented documents to support the validity of the marriage, including records from the Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Nigerian Embassy in Morocco.

He also alleged that Gumi later sought the dissolution of the marriage and interfered with attempts to involve security agencies.

Idris has called on the cleric to honour a police invitation, insisting that a formal investigation would establish what happened.

Meanwhile, Malam Nasiru Ayuba, popularly known as Dan Agaji, a senior associate of Gumi and chairman of the Volunteers of Sultan Bello Mosque in Kaduna, rejected the allegation that the cleric kept the Moroccan woman in his house.

Ayuba claimed that the woman approached Gumi voluntarily to seek assistance over a personal matter and that the cleric subsequently took the matter to court.

He also accused Idris of attempting to damage Gumi’s reputation through social media.

The dispute has produced sharply contrasting accounts, with Idris calling for an investigation into his wife’s whereabouts, while Gumi maintains that she has returned to Morocco and is staying with her parents.
