Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, has sought the approval of the state House of Assembly for a N1.201tn supplementary and amendment budget for the 2026 fiscal year.
The governor’s request was contained in a letter read by the Speaker of the House, Is’ma’il Falgore, during plenary on Tuesday.
Yusuf said the supplementary budget has become necessary following a shortfall in receipts from the federation account, which he attributed partly to the implementation of the new tax law.
He explained that the state had expected higher inflows from the federation account, including Value Added Tax (VAT), but noted that some receipts, such as signature bonuses, exchange differences and NNPC refunds, remained with the Federal Government.
According to the proposal, the state government expects to fund the supplementary budget with N45billion opening balance, N753.440billion in recurrent revenue and N402.821bn in capital receipts.

The three sources would provide a total of N1.201trillion for the proposed supplementary appropriation.
On expenditure, the governor proposed N390.314billion for recurrent expenditure and N810.946billion for capital expenditure, bringing the total proposed expenditure to N1.201trillion.
The recurrent expenditure comprises N169.961bn for personnel costs, N195.207billion for overheads and N24.616billion for debt servicing.
Yusuf also informed the lawmakers that the amendment included new partnership arrangements between the state and local governments aimed at improving economic growth and development.
He said the arrangement would enable receipts jointly generated by the state and local governments to be captured and used to finance selected development projects.
The governor urged the lawmakers to consider and approve the bill expeditiously, citing Section 122(a) and (b) of the 1999 Constitution, as amended.
After the letter was read, Falgore told members that it would be referred to the House Rules and Business Committee for further legislative processing.
“Honourable members, this is the supplementary letter received from His Excellency, Executive Governor of Kano State, for consideration and approval,” the speaker said.
He subsequently, sought the leave of the House to refer the proposal to the committee for consideration.
