Over 400,000 traders and artisans have been registered by the Kano State Traders and Street Hawkers Agency.

More empowerment programmes planned for tailors, mechanics, food vendors, hairdressers and other artisans.

Speaking during the distribution ceremony in Kano, Governor Yusuf said the initiative reflects his administration’s commitment to strengthening the informal sector and ensuring that governance delivers direct economic benefits to ordinary citizens.

He disclosed that the 2026 Kano State Budget has made adequate provision for the establishment of cottage industries and enterprise suites in strategic locations across the state, adding that implementation would begin in the coming months.

According to the governor, the facilities will provide modern workspaces, shared production equipment, storage facilities, business support services, vocational training and organised marketing channels for artisans and small-scale business owners.

Yusuf explained that the proposed cottage industries would feature dedicated sections for butchers, meat processing, leather processing and tannery operations, creating an integrated value chain capable of generating employment opportunities for youths while promoting local industrial development.

He described butchers as vital contributors to Kano’s economy, noting that the sector plays a critical role in food security while supplying raw materials to the state’s leather and tannery industries.

The governor urged beneficiaries to make productive use of the butchery kits to expand their businesses, improve productivity and enhance their sources of income.

He also encouraged traders, artisans and small business owners across the state to register with the Kano State Traders and Street Hawkers Agency to benefit from future government empowerment initiatives.

Earlier, the Managing Director of the Kano State Traders and Street Hawkers Agency, Abubakar Bichi, disclosed that the agency has successfully registered and profiled more than 400,000 petty traders, artisans and street hawkers across Kano State.

He added that over 10,000 traders and hawkers have already received official identification cards, while preparations are underway to extend similar empowerment programmes to tailors, hairdressers, mechanics, food vendors and other skilled artisans.

Bichi said the agency remains committed to supporting the Kano State Government’s vision of improving livelihoods, promoting entrepreneurship and expanding economic opportunities for residents through targeted empowerment programmes.
