The spectacular opening ceremony at the OVO Hydro Arena in Glasgow featured a vibrant celebration of Scotland’s culture, music, dance, storytelling and technological innovation, setting the stage for the 23rd Commonwealth Games.
One of the defining moments of the ceremony was the historic joint parade of para-athletes and non-para athletes, highlighting the Commonwealth Games’ commitment to inclusion, diversity and unity.
Team Nigeria’s contingent received warm applause as the 74 athletes proudly marched into the arena in eye-catching traditional attire, reflecting the country’s cultural identity and sporting ambition.
The ceremony also featured the dramatic arrival of King Charles III and Queen Camilla through the iconic Doctor Who TARDIS. The King officially declared the Games open and welcomed more than 3,000 athletes and officials from across the Commonwealth, encouraging them to embrace friendship, excellence and unity through sport.
Nigeria will compete in 10 sports, including athletics, boxing, weightlifting, judo, swimming, track cycling, 3×3 basketball, 3×3 wheelchair basketball, para powerlifting and para athletics.
The National Sports Commission has set an ambitious target of 20 gold medals, with Team Nigeria boasting a blend of experienced champions and emerging stars expected to challenge for podium finishes.
Leading Nigeria’s medal campaign are world record holder Tobi Amusan, sprint stars Kanyinsola Ajayi, Favour Ashe and Samuel Ogazi, shot put specialist Chukwuebuka Enekwechi, long jumper Prestina Ochonogor, triple jumper Ruth Usoro, weightlifting champions Rafiatu Lawal and Onome Didih, alongside para powerlifting icons Folashade Oluwafemiayo, Roland Ezurike and Esther Nworgu.
