The Federal Government has pledged to support the Akwa Ibom State Government as it has taken a major step toward positioning itself as a leading healthcare destination in Africa with the unveiling of its ambitious Medical City project, a landmark initiative designed to transform healthcare delivery, reduce medical tourism and provide world-class medical services within Nigeria.
The unveiling ceremony, performed by the Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, attracted healthcare experts, development partners and industry stakeholders who described the project as one of the most significant healthcare investments in Nigeria’s history.
Speaking at the event, Governor Umo Eno characterized the Medical City as one of the most visionary projects of his administration.
He said the initiative was conceived not only to meet the healthcare needs of Akwa Ibom residents but also to provide accessible, high-quality medical care to Nigerians and Africans seeking specialized treatment.
Governor Eno acknowledged the support of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, noting that the Federal Government’s reforms have created an enabling environment for state governments to pursue transformative development projects.
Situated on approximately 100 hectares of land, the Medical City is aligned with the state’s ARISE Agenda and the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
The facility is designed as a technologically advanced, patient-centered healthcare ecosystem aimed at reducing the need for overseas medical treatment while establishing Akwa Ibom as a regional center for medical excellence.
Beyond healthcare delivery, the governor highlighted the project’s economic benefits, including job creation, economic stimulation and long-term financial sustainability. He disclosed that the state has recruited 2,844 healthcare professionals since March 2025 and is expanding health insurance coverage as part of efforts to achieve universal healthcare access.
In his keynote address, Prof. Pate commended Governor Eno for his commitment to improving citizens’ wellbeing, describing the Medical City as a practical reflection of the Federal Government’s healthcare reform agenda.
He assured the state of continued federal support and pledged to facilitate partnerships with Nigerian healthcare professionals in the diaspora whose expertise would contribute to the project’s success.
He also advocated broader health insurance coverage to improve access to quality healthcare services.
Providing technical details of the project, the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Emmanuel Ekem John, and the Project Manager, Dr. Teinye Isokariari, described the Medical City as far more than a conventional hospital, calling it a comprehensive healthcare excellence initiative.
According to Dr. Ekem, the facility will feature a 10-storey complex housing 62 medical specialties and equipped with cutting-edge technology capable of delivering healthcare services that meet global standards.
Dr. Isokariari revealed that 100 Akwa Ibom indigenes will undergo specialized overseas training before the project’s completion to ensure the effective operation of the advanced medical equipment.
He added that the structure is supported by 356 foundation piles designed to guarantee durability and structural stability.
Stakeholders across the healthcare sector applauded the initiative as a game-changing development for Nigeria’s medical landscape.
The Secretary-General of the Nigerian Cancer Society, Prof. Adamu, described the project as a transformative intervention that would significantly improve cancer treatment and healthcare outcomes nationwide.
Similarly, the National President of the Nigerian Medical Association, Prof. Ernest, praised Governor Eno’s substantial investments in healthcare, particularly the introduction of retention allowances aimed at strengthening and retaining the healthcare workforce.
As Akwa Ibom continues to expand its development portfolio, including plans for the commissioning of a new aircraft terminal, the Medical City stands as a powerful symbol of the state’s determination to become a center of medical innovation, excellence and specialized healthcare delivery for Nigeria and the wider African continent.
