The federal government has introduced a technology-driven learning programme designed to improve the professional skills of teachers, with a special focus on empowering female educators and school leaders across Nigeria and four other African countries.

The initiative was officially launched in Abuja on Monday, with the commencement of a three-day master training programme aimed at equipping participants with digital and mobile-based teaching tools to enhance classroom instruction and educational leadership.
According to a statement issued by the Federal Ministry of Education through its Director of Press and Public Relations, Boriowo Folasade on Tuesday, the training will be held from July 21 to July 23, 2026, under the theme: “Empowering Female Teachers and School Leaders through Integrating Mobile-based Learning in the Pan-African Virtual and Electronic University (PAVEU) Initiative.”
The programme is being implemented through a partnership involving the Federal Ministry of Education, the UNESCO International Institute for Capacity Building in Africa (UNESCO-IICBA) and the Pan-African University (PAU).

Financial support for the project is provided by the government of Japan, as part of broader efforts to expand access to continuous professional development for teachers across Africa.
The initiative targets educators in Nigeria, Algeria, Cameroon, Kenya and South Sudan, with particular emphasis on strengthening the capacity of female teachers and school administrators through flexible digital learning opportunities.
According to the ministry, the mobile learning platform has been developed to address many of the obstacles that have traditionally limited teachers’ access to professional training, including inadequate infrastructure, geographical barriers and time constraints.
The programme enables participants to study using mobile devices through a platform that requires minimal internet connectivity and also supports offline access, allowing educators to learn at their convenience regardless of location.
Officials said the initiative is expected to make continuous professional development more accessible while encouraging wider adoption of technology in teaching and school management.
The federal government noted that improving teacher capacity remains central to ongoing education reforms, stressing that investment in professional development is essential for raising learning standards and improving educational outcomes nationwide.
The ministry also reaffirmed its commitment to working with international partners to modernise teacher training through digital innovation and expand opportunities for educators to acquire new skills.
It stated that accessible, technology-enabled learning remains critical to building a more resilient, inclusive and future-ready education system capable of meeting the demands of modern classrooms.
