The intervention, known as the National Emergency Relief and Stabilisation Intervention (NERSI), was officially announced on Friday, October 30, 2026, by the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Bernard Doro.
According to the minister, the presidential initiative is designed to provide immediate financial assistance to millions of vulnerable Nigerians through a shock-responsive cash transfer programme that will help households meet essential needs and maintain short-term financial stability.
Under the programme, each eligible beneficiary will receive ₦50,000 monthly, with the amount subject to periodic reviews in response to changes in the cost of living.
Doro explained that beneficiaries would be notified directly before any adjustment is made to the payment arrangement.
How Beneficiaries Will Be Paid
To ensure secure, transparent and timely disbursement, the ministry has partnered with licensed digital financial service providers responsible for facilitating payments to beneficiaries.
He said eligible beneficiaries would receive text messages (SMS) from the authorised providers requesting their consent to participate in the payment process.
Once consent is granted, the funds will be transferred directly into beneficiaries’ bank accounts or mobile wallets.
The minister stressed that the intervention complements existing federal government social protection and economic support programmes, reaffirming the administration’s commitment to reducing economic hardship and strengthening household resilience.
He said NERSI aligns with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu, adding that the ministry would ensure the programme is implemented with dignity, transparency and accountability.

He further warned beneficiaries against disclosing their personal identification numbers (PINs) or Bank Verification Numbers (BVNs) to anyone.
The minister advised anyone uncertain about the authenticity of a message or approached by individuals demanding money in connection with the programme to contact the official NERSI helpline on 0700-022-2222.
