President Ahmed Tinubu has approved the appointment of Dr. Kingsley Onoriode Akaba of the department of Haematology, Faculty of Basic Clinical Sciences, University of Calabar, as the substantive and pioneer Chief Medical Director of the newly established Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Ovwian, Delta State.
While presenting the letter of appointment to the new Chief Medical Director, the Minister of State for Health, Dr. Salak Iziaq Adekunle Adeboye described the appointment as a reward for his good and exceptional work in the Medical and teaching profession.
Speaking further in a brief ceremony in the Minister office, Abuja, the Minister noted that as a new establishment, it is imperative to engage someone that is knowledgeable, experienced in the medical profession adding that Dr. Akaba, a chief Consultant, fit perfectly well to be so appointed.
Reacting, Dr. Kingsley Akaba is a distinguished son of Udu Local Government Area, thanked God for granting him the privilege to serve as the Pioneer CMD of the Federal Medical Centre, Ovwian. This is even as he appreciated President Bola Tinubu for finding him worthy for the appointment.
Dr. Akaba while also thanking the Minister of State for health, Dr. Salak Iziaq Adekunle Adeboye, the Governor of Delta State Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori for his appointment, Praised the member representing Ughelli North, Ughelli South, Udu federal constituency, Revd. Francis E. Waive, Minister of Aviation, Chief Festus Keyamo, Chief Cecilia Ibru and His Royal Highness, Ovie of Udu Kingdom for being dependable leaders.
He promised to take the new Federal Medical Centre to an enviable position while bringing onboard his academic and clinical expertises, and his visionary leadership to bear on the day to day operations of the Centre.
Dr Akaba, the new CMD Holds an MBB.Ch and a Ph.D. He is a fellow of several prestigious institutions, including the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria (FMCPath), the Royal College of Pathologists (UK), and the International Federation of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine (IFCAP, USA).
He also holds multiple certifications from global institutions and the World Health Organization, underscoring his international competence and standing.

Before his appointment, Dr. Akaba is a Chief Consultant at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital and Head of Department of Haematology, faculty of Basic Clinical Sciences at the University of Calabar where he has been widely acclaimed for driving systemic reforms, enhancing service delivery, and promoting excellence in healthcare.
His career spans decades of impactful teaching and mentorship, having trained numerous consultants across Africa and made the study of haematology more accessible through innovative pedagogical strategies.
The new CMD is an award-winning educator, who has previously served as Chairman of the Grant and Research Committee at Kampala International University, Uganda, where he was named Best Lecturer, reflecting his global academic influence.
Dr. Akaba is also a prolific researcher with over 70 publications in Haematology, oncology, and diagnostics contributions that have drawn international collaboration and advanced medical science.
Beyond the hospital and classroom, Dr. Akaba is actively involved in shaping health policy through engagement with national and international medical bodies.
