Nigeria’s U-20 women’s team, the Falconets, secured a 2-0 victory over Malawi in the first leg of their final qualifying round for the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup on Saturday in Ikenne-Remo.
The result strengthens Nigeria’s chances of extending their consistent record at the global tournament, where they have featured in every edition since its inception in 2002.
Despite dominating possession and creating numerous chances in the first half, the Falconets were unable to break the deadlock before halftime, largely due to a resolute Malawian defence and an impressive performance by goalkeeper Emily Nkhwazi.
The breakthrough came shortly after the restart, as increased attacking intensity paid off in the 47th minute when Malawi’s Maureen Kenneth inadvertently turned the ball into her own net under pressure.

Nigeria doubled their lead 10 minutes later through Kindness Ifeanyi, who finished off a well-worked move after a precise assist from Faridat Abdulwahab.
Malawi attempted a late response, but the Falconets maintained defensive discipline to preserve their two-goal advantage heading into the second leg.
Head coach Moses Adukwu will now take his side to Lilongwe with a strong advantage as they seek to secure qualification.
Following the victory, the team received a financial reward of ₦1 million from Kunle Soname, who had pledged ₦500,000 per goal prior to the match.
The return leg is scheduled for May 9 at the Bingu National Stadium, with kickoff set for 3:00 p.m. local time.
