The Borno State Ministry of Environment has stepped up its sanitation campaign across Maiduguri and surrounding communities in a renewed effort to improve environmental hygiene and protect public health.
The May sanitation exercise was led by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr. Juliana Bitrus, alongside the General Manager of the Borno State Environmental Protection Agency (BOSEPA), Sulaiman Abubakar.
The initiative drew participation from BOSEPA officials, the Borno State Transport Management Agency (BOTMA), ministry staff, and volunteers from various community-based organisations.
Clean up operations were carried out across major roads, residential neighbourhoods, public spaces, and motor parks. Activities focused on refuse evacuation, public sensitisation, and the promotion of sustainable sanitation practices.
Speaking during the exercise, Dr. Bitrus highlighted the importance of clearing drainage systems and desilting blocked waterways, particularly in flood-prone areas.
She noted that such efforts are essential in reducing the risk of seasonal flooding and ensuring long-term environmental sustainability.
