The Federal Aviation Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has addressed the recent claims of a man who alleged he was detained by security personnel at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos, for filming with his camera.

The individual, known as @chupatric on X, shared his experience on social media, questioning whether it is prohibited to record videos inside the airport.

He stated, “@mikeachimugu01 Good morning sir, I have a question. I was detained at MMIA by AVSEC because of my GoPro, which I use to document my travels on my YouTube channel.

“I was taken to an office downstairs and showed them videos from my gallery, which were personal shots. Is it not allowed to make personal videos?”

In a statement posted on X on February 21, FAAN clarified that the man was recording in a restricted security screening area, where clear signage indicated that filming is not allowed.

The agency explained that officers politely requested he stop filming, particularly since other travelers have the right not to be recorded without their consent, and such complaints are common.

The agency stated that when the passenger refused to comply, he was invited to the crime investigation and intelligence unit for further discussion, but he was not detained.

It said the focus of the interaction was to provide guidance on acceptable camera use within the airport.

According to the agency, the passenger subsequently deleted the recording, signed a written agreement, and continued his journey.

It reassured the public that personal selfie videos are permitted, and intervention only occurs when filming involves other passengers without their consent or captures sensitive operational or security areas.

“These policies are designed to protect privacy, safety, and ensure smooth airport operations,” FAAN added.
