In a key political development ahead of the upcoming general elections, the former Minister of Power, Sale Mamman, has declared support for the adoption of direct primaries by the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Taraba state.
Mamman aligned his position with the directive of President Bola Tinubu and the national leadership of the party, stressing that allowing party members to choose candidates through direct primaries represents the most credible and democratic process.
The former minister, who is also an aspirant for the state’s top political office, made his stance known amid ongoing internal discussions within the Taraba APC over the method of candidate selection.
Party stakeholders have reportedly been considering a consensus arrangement.
Mamman was notably absent from a recent stakeholders’ meeting convened by the state governor, where three committees were established to facilitate the emergence of a consensus candidate.

He expressed doubts about the viability of that approach, suggesting that the consensus initiative may not succeed.
Instead, he called on the state chapter of the APC to adhere to the guidance of the presidency and party leadership by prioritizing inclusivity and transparency through direct primaries.
Highlighting his longstanding involvement in the party, the former minister pointed to his role in building the APC’s presence in Taraba State, dating back to his participation in the defunct Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), one of the parties that later merged to form the APC.
He described himself as one of the party’s earliest members in the state and argued that his experience positions him as a strong contender, even if a consensus option is eventually adopted.
As political activities gather momentum in Taraba State, Mamman’s position is likely to influence ongoing debates within the APC regarding candidate selection and campaign strategy ahead of the elections.
