Wydad AC of Morocco have won the CAF Champions League final after defeating the defending champions and Egypt’s top-flight club, Ahly SC, 2-0 at the Mohammed V Complex, Casablanca, Morocco.

The one-leg final in which Zouheir El-Moutaraji opened the scoresheet in the first half for Wydad AC, heralded the clinching of their third CAF Champions League trophy in a remarkable campaign.

Wydad AC having probably enjoyed the support of their home fans in the stadium, after Morocco won the right to host the CAF topmost event for African clubs, doubled the lead from the same player, 3 minutes after the start of the second half.

Ahly struggled to put one back to reignite a campaign for an eleventh CAF Champions League title but met stiff resistance from a familiar foe who had stopped them previously in 2017 to win a 2nd CAF CL title.

Although Nadi El Watanniyah dominated the field of play with a stat of 67% against Wydad AS’s 33%, the latter still took the day with El-Moutaraji’s brace to hand coach Walid Regragui his first-ever CAF Champions League trophy.

Both North African clubs have had a running battle, with Wydad AS being displaced by Ahly SC in the 2020’s final as payback for 2017’s painful loss. The 2020 win was Ahly’s 9th CAF Champions League title.

The Trumpet reports that Wydad AS victory saw the club win the 58th edition of the CAF Champions League final on their home soil on May 30, 2022.
